Philosophy Upper Year Course Requirements

For convenience, the upper year course requirements for the various Honour Schools are summarised below (but be sure to check official documentation). A brief description of each of the courses can be found at Philosophy Course Descriptions.

Requirements for PPE

All PPE students continuing with Philosophy are required to study at least one philosophy paper focusing on influential classic texts, either 101 History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, 115 Plato: Republic, or 116 Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics. They are also required to study 103 Ethics as part of the Philosophy core. In the second and third years combined, Bi-Partite students should take between 3 and 5 Philosophy papers altogether, and Tri-Partite students between 2 and 4.

Requirements for Mathematics and Philosophy

Mathematics and Philosophy students are required to study 122 Philosophy of Mathematics and either 101 History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant or 102 Knowledge and Reality. In the second and third years combined, they should take either 3 or 4 Philosophy papers altogether. In the fourth year, they may take up to 3 additional Philosophy papers, with almost a free choice.

Requirements for Philosophy and Modern Languages

Philosophy and Modern Languages students are required to study at least one philosophy paper focusing on influential classic texts, either 101 History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, 115 Plato: Republic, or 116 Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics. Other than that, they have almost a free choice, as long as in the second and third years combined, they take between 3 and 5 Philosophy papers altogether.

Requirements for Physics and Philosophy

Physics and Philosophy students are required to study 120 Intermediate Philosophy of Physics, either 101 History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant or 102 Knowledge and Reality, and one Philosophy of Science paper (which can be 105 Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Psychology & Neuroscience, 106 Philosophy of Science and Social Science, or 124 Philosophy of Science – most choose 124). In the third year, they can also choose one additional Philosophy paper if they wish, with almost a free choice. In the fourth year, they may take up to 3 additional Philosophy papers, with almost a free choice.

Requirements for Psychology and Philosophy

Psychology and Philosophy students are required to study at least two of the following four philosophy papers: 101 History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, 102 Knowledge and Reality, 104 Philosophy of Mind, and 105 Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Psychology & Neuroscience. Other than that, they have almost a free choice, as long as in the second and third years combined, they take between 3 and 5 Philosophy papers altogether.
